Vintage Marzi & Remy German stoneware beer stein (or tankard) featuring a pewter lid and thumblift with a transferware depiction of three jousting knights on horseback. Marzi and Remy were founded in 1879 and survived only until 1994.
The colors of this vintage collectible German beer stein are a deep rich red-brown along the top lip and base, and a sandy-tan-light brown within the center, including the high relief trim. The colors of the three jousting knights are vibrant and without flaw.
Steins originated in the 14th century. As a result of the bubonic plague and several invasions of flies in Europe, Germany established laws to require beverage containers to be covered for sanitary purposes.
Around the same time, techniques to improve earthenware by raising the firing temperature of clay, created stoneware. Thus, there was a presence of stoneware drinking vessels with attached pewter lids for the next 300 years.
By the end of the 19th century, the stein was clearly defined as being made in Europe, primarily of stoneware and primarily with a permanently attached pewter lid.
Measuring 5" to the lip, 5.5" to the top of the pewter lid and 6.25" to the top of the ball thumblift, this vintage German beer stein is 4" in diameter tapering to 3.125" at the lip of the stein. Weighs 1 pound, 11.1 ounces.
This vintage German beer stein is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. The inside is pristine! The flat pewter beer stein lid is also in excellent condition, with no dings, dents or other damage to note. Marked on the inside of the lid with 86, DBGM and a diamond. The lid uses a closed, five ring hinge with a ball thumblift.
The stoneware beer stein is marked on the bottom with an M over an R within a diamond - the mark of Marzi & Remy. In addition, there seems to be yet another lightly impressed mark, but we are unable to decipher it. Stamped in ink along the underside edge is MADE IN GERMANY.
