This vintage souvenir silver plate & enamel pendant depicts the first two hotels built on the Palm Beach, the Aruba Caribbean (built in 1959) and the Sheraton (built in 1964). No other hotels were built on Aruba for a few more years and this brooch dates to that interval, between the Sheraton (now a part of the Rui complex) and the construction of the next-built hotels. The Aruba Caribbean is now the Radisson.
Aruba is a 33-kilometer-long (20 mi) island of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean Sea, located 17 miles north of the coast of Venezuela and approximately 81 miles east of Guajira Peninsula (Colombia). Together with Bonaire and Curaçao, it forms a group referred to as the ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles, the southern island chain of the Lesser Antilles . Aruba and all the Dutch islands in the Antilles together, are commonly referred to as the Netherlands Antilles (or the Dutch Antilles).
Aruba is one of the four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, together with the Netherlands, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten whose citizens share a single nationality: Dutch citizen. Aruba has no administrative subdivisions, but for census purposes is divided into eight regions. Its capital is Oranjestad.
Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to the island can reliably expect warm, sunny weather. It has a land area of 69.1 square miles and is densely populated with a total of 101,484 inhabitants at the 2010 Census. It lies outside the hurricane belt.
