Vintage LADY DORIS / PRINCESS silverplate gravy ladle. (c. 1929) The Lady Doris pattern was introduced by International Silver Company in 1929. The pattern is also named PRINCESS. Some wear along the handle top is noted, and the bowl is no longer shiny silver. Very slight heel wear. Overall this vintage silverplate gravy ladle is in very good condition with many more decades of use.
Even though gravy ladles date to the Roman era and sterling silver flatware was first produced in Sheffield, England in the 1200's, sterling silver and silverplate ladles did not see widespread use until the mid-18th century, when a companion to the newly embraced- soup tureen was needed. A long, gooseneck-handled spoon with a working end big enough to efficiently fill a soup bowl was an obvious complement.
Like a lot of flatware of the day, sterling silver and silverplate ladles conformed to the prevailing style.
