Vintage CUI (for Old Spice) glass etched beer stein featuring the limited edition 0.5L depiction of the famous clipper ship of the 1860's, the Ariel. This was the fourth and final of four ships portrayed on the Nautical Stein Series (c. 1990). Excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs on the body of this vintage glass stein. Please note that there is a tiny dent on the edge of the pewter-look aluminum lid.
The Ariel was a clipper ship famous for making fast voyages between China and England in the late 1860's. The Ariel was a full rigged ship of 853 tons net register, measuring 197.4 feet (60.2 m) x 33.9 feet x 21 feet (6.4 m). She was designed by William Rennie, and built in 1865 by Robert Steele & Co., Greenock for Shaw, Lowther & Maxton of London. Like most tea clippers she was composite built, of timber planking over iron frames.
Ariel is most famous for almost winning The Great Tea Race of 1866, an unofficial race between Foochow, China and London with the first tea crop of the 1866 season.
This vintage glass beer stein has a slightly tapered body with a starburst light reflecting pattern on the bottom of the base. The pewter-look aluminum lid features a nautical ship's wheel on the top and on the inside with a shell-like design as the thumb lift. The frosted etching on the front of the stein of the Ariel is crisp and without damage.
This vintage collectible lidded glass beer stein measures 6" tall to the lip of the glass stein, 6-3/4" tall to the top of the lid, 7-1/4" tall to the top of the thumblift, is 3-3/4" in diameter at the base, 5-1/5" from the outside edge of the handle to the outside edge of the glass body and weighs 2 pounds. The starburst bottom is marked CUI, and the bridge between the handle and thumblift is marked OLD SPICE.
