Vintage silverplate footed gravy or sauce boat with attached underplate with a scalloped and floral and scroll border along the outside edge of the attached gravy underplate. "Like New" condition with no dings, dents or silverplate wear or loss and nary a polishing mark to be found. Polished to a mirror silver finish all over. Floral and scroll embellished "S" shaped handle.
During the elaborate Victorian dinner, many courses called for gravy or sauce. The silversmith made a variety of shapes and forms designed to serve all types of gravies and sauces. The typical silver and silverplate gravy boat can be described as an elongated pitcher with a handle.
Most silver plated gravy boats have a separate tray, but many are simply one-piece, a tray and pitcher either molded or soldered together. Each style has its advantages. Sauce boats are smaller than gravy boats. Many boats originally had a matching gravy or sauce ladle, depending upon the vessel and the contents that it was to serve. Some boats have feet in the form of shells or scrolls, while other stand on a simple applied foot or pedestal base.
The silver plate footed gravy boat or sauce boat is in outstanding, like-new condition with no dings, dents, scratches or silverplate wear or loss. This vintage silverplate footed gravy or sauce boat has a highly polished silver finish and measures 7.25" from the tip of the gravy sauce boat spout to the tip of the handle, the actual gravy boat bowl measures 6.5" x 3.5 and stands 5.25" tall at the tip of the decorative handle, the attached underplate measures 9" x 6" and weighs 15.7 ounces. Unmarked as to maker, but most likely Oneida Silver.
