Uncommon vintage silverplate set of five round bowl cream soup or gumbo spoons and one teaspoon in the REMEMBRANCE pattern by 1847 Rogers. (c. 1948) Excellent vintage condition with only one cream soup spoon showing a tiny spot as shown in photo. No heal wear.
Each of the five round bowl cream soup spoons is beautifully monogrammed on the handle with the letter "R" in script. Each measures 6-3/8" in length. The matching teaspoon measures 6-1/8" in length and is also monogrammed. Each of the spoons is touchmarked on the back with 1847 ROGERS BROS. IS (International Silver) and the pattern name, REMEMBRANCE, in script. This pattern of silver flatware has been discontinued.
At a formal dinner the cream soup spoon is not used, because cream soup is considered too rich and heavy to start a multi-course meal. However, at a meal with a simpler menu, namely, a formal luncheon and all informal meals, often a first course of cream soup is served, sipped from the side of the cream soup spoon.
Thick soup served in a soup dish is eaten with the soup spoon. If you want to get the last bit of it, there is no impropriety in tipping the dish away from you in order to collect it at the edge.
