Exceptional early Victorian silverplate sugar bowl and creamer set by Walker & Hall, Sheffield, pattern #11, with outstanding decorative motifs such as flowers and leaves surrounding this heavily detailed set.
The antique silver sugar bowl's lid features a mirror image of sprigs on both sides of the knob, which is removable. The base of the knob has a tiny row of beads along the base. The inside of the sugar bowl shows considerable use marks, and the silverplate has all but been worn or polished off over the years. I'd estimate that 70% of the original silver is still intact. The only problem other than wear noted is one side of the sugar bowl has a very shallow indentation, which can be felt, but barely seen.
The matching antique silver plate creamer has considerable silverplate wear on one side, the other just a small amount. The silver on the handle is quite worn and the inside shows considerable use marks and three areas of discoloration.
Both antique silverplate holloware items features lattice and floral chase work along a decorative banding near the base, another band of flowers & leaves along the top, and yet another band of tiny flowers along the rim. The engraved flowers, leaves and vines in the center are deeply etched and extremely detailed.
As is, this is a fine collectible set. Should you have it re-silvered, it could easily become your favorite set in your antique silver collection.
During the mid 1800’s Walker & Hall was one of the largest manufacturers and retailers of silver and silver plate, and continued to be from the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Their products can be found with London, Sheffield and Chester hallmarks. The original partnership, including George Walker, traded as Walker & Co. Henry Hall joined the partnership in 1848, the firm was renamed Walker, Coulson & Hall, before becoming just Walker & Hall in 1853. In 1890 Walker & Hall employed 700 people, with a production that ranged from silver plated holloware items to high quality silverware.
The silverplate sugar bowl measures 8" from handle to handle, stands 5" high, the base is 3¼" x 5¼" oval and weighs 1 pound 1.4 ounces. The matching silverplate creamer measures 6" from tip of creamer spout to tip of handle, stands 4" high, the base measures 4" x 2¾" oval and weighs 9.1 ounces.
Both pieces are touchmarked on their bases with WALKER & HALL, SHEFFIELD, the Walker & Hall mark of W&H in a flag, and a pattern/stock number of 11. The silver is still very thick with no wear on the bases. You can read more about the history of Walker & Hall at our Silver Manufacturers pages.
